Flowers & Fauna
|
Words cannot describe the Spring flowers that grow so prolifically, it is an enormous wild flower garden with so many varieties changing from week to week in each valley or altitude running into over 1300 registered species!
The bird life is incredible with sightings most days of bonelli's eagles, there are buzzards, kites, griffon vultures, bee eaters to name but a few.
The cork is still harvested as it has been for generations with pack mules & a team of men with long handled axes.
The forests offer a rich variety of fauna including deer, wild boar, fox & mongoose which you are very likely to see when driving through. As you can imagine hunting is also a popular pastime with the local folk and with out doubt the reason man ever came here in the first instance.
Tree heather grows beneath these evergreen oaks & is also a major harvest to make 'brezo' that is so populer for sun shades, thatching & garden shelter also of which the roots of tree heather are used for making briar smoking pipes.

Other 'fruits of the forest' include the abundance of wild mushrooms(setas)such as chantereles & boletus that are collected in the 'Winter' months. There are many trees that grow here they include chestnuts, walnuts, figs, almond & of course olives.
When possible we have home grown salads & herbs including rocket, chervil, basil, cherry tomatoes, bay leaves & we make our own richly flavoured oil, herb/flower teas and delicious homemade icecream!
